Columbus F. Johnson, 30, butcher, saved R. Oscar Patterson, 22, farmhand, from suffocation, Crawford, Texas, August 20, 1912. Patterson was overcome by fumes in a well in which a heavy charge of blasting powder had been set off but a few minutes before. Although Patterson’s employer refused to enter the well and warned Johnson not to do so, Johnson grasped the well rope and slid 17 feet to the bottom, where he tied the rope around Patterson. He then quickly climbed the rope to the surface, and Patterson was hoisted. Patterson was revived in about an hour. 9401-814
