Clyde C. Morris, 27, student, helped to save Jesse L. Fettis, 27, clerk, from drowning, Kentwood, Louisiana, June 16, 1912. Fettis sank from exhaustion in deep water just below a submerged log in the Tangipahoa River and was carried downstream. Morris, who had just reached shallow water above the log and was tired from a hard swim, swam to Fettis and grasped his hand. He swam a few feet with Fettis, then Fettis twice tried to grasp Morris, and Morris jerked free from Fettis but remained near to help him. Fettis sank under water and drifted against another submerged log, 75 feet below the first. Morris drifted against the same log and was too nearly exhausted to leave the water. Another man waded out on the log, found Fettis, and dragged him ashore. He was semiconscious. Morris, who was assisted ashore, was semiconscious and was longer in recovering than Fettis was. Neither was permanently affected. 11274-1212
