Clifford S. Irey, 22, laborer, died attempting to save Melvin G. Lively, 17, schoolboy, from drowning, Prindle, Washington, July 24, 1927. While Melvin was swimming in the Columbia River 40 feet from the bank, he began to struggle and then to drift in an eddy current. Irey, who was a poor swimmer, waded from the bank and swam 12 feet to him. He drifted in the current with Melvin for about 125 feet, and then both were drowned. 27731-2299
