Clarence King died attempting to save Marguerite S. Meier from drowning, Texarkana, Texas, June 11, 1923. Miss Meier, 31, drove her automobile onto a railway crossing 20 feet from Nix Creek, and a train struck the automobile and threw her into the creek. The creek was swollen from heavy rains and was nine feet deep. Fully clothed, King, 20, factory hand, ran into the water, swam 15 feet to a point close to Miss Meier, and then drifted in the current behind her. Miss Meier drifted 600 feet and then caught hold of submerged willows and was helped to the bank. King drifted a few feet farther, sank, and was drowned. 24938-2155
