Clarence C. La Barr, 26, pipefitter, saved Frank Spirk, 30, pipefitter, from suffocation, Hellertown, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1916. (See case of FRANK SPIRK.) La Barr entered the tank through the manhole, descended the rope to Spirk, and tied the rope to him. Spirk was raised through the manhole, and La Barr was then overcome by the gas. A man, who had an extra rope tied to himself and was otherwise protected, descended the rope to La Barr, tied the rope to La Barr’s ankles, and was then raised through the manhole. La Barr was then raised through the manhole. He was unconscious three hours but was revived. 16401-1501
