Christopher M. Ihli saved Raymond S. Bahou from burning, Pebble Beach, California, June 25, 1992. Bahou, 54, was the driver of a tractor-trailer that, in a highway accident, overturned onto its driver’s side and spilled part of its load of 8,000 gallons of gasoline. Having witnessed the accident, Ihli, 21, business owner, approached the truck and saw Bahou inside the cab. Ihli climbed onto the passenger side of the tractor and maneuvered open the door, which had been blocked by the truck’s exhaust pipe. Ihli and Bahou joined hands, Ihli then pulling on Bahou to help him climb out of the cab. As the two men stood atop the tractor, the spilled gasoline caught fire, virtually encompassing the tractor in flame. They quickly jumped to the ground and ran from the tractor, which was destroyed by the fire. Bahou was treated at the hospital for a cut, and he recovered.
