Charlie Lee Morgan died helping to save Beverly D. Koch from drowning, St. Johns, North Carolina, September 8, 1968. Beverly, 7, was in a motorboat in Albemarle Sound with her father, her brother, and Morgan, 50, textile laborer, when the craft capsized in deep water more than a mile from shore. Beverly and her brother, neither of whom could swim, began flailing and calling for help. Morgan swam to Beverly and supported her at the surface. The father took a life jacket to his son and then went to help Morgan with Beverly. Before he reached them, both sank. Beverly reappeared; but Morgan remained submerged. The father held Beverly at the surface, and the son clung to the life jacket until others came to their aid with life preservers and boats. Morgan’s body later was recovered.
