Charles W. Laase attempted to save Alfred Tulipano from drowning, Girard, Ohio, June 27, 1933. While wading in the Mahoning River, Tulipano, 19, machinist, stepped into water 7.5 feet deep at a point 50 feet from the bank and was momentarily submerged. After a man who had tried to aid Tulipano freed himself of Tulipano’s grasp and had regained wadable water, Laase, 25, laborer, swam 20 feet to Tulipano. As Laase tried to take hold of him, Tulipano grabbed him. After a prolonged struggle, in which both were submerged and rose twice, the two again were submerged. Laase jerked and twisted free, rose winded and slightly dazed, and swam three feet to wadable water. Tulipano was drowned. 33270-2751
