Charles P. McGuire, Jr., attempted to save John H. Eddleman from drowning, Calcis, Alabama, June 15, 1940. While swimming in Kelleys Creek, Eddlernan, 25, clerk, drifted over a dam, over which water dropped nine feet, and thence to a point 50 feet from the bank and 35 feet from the dam. He sustained a fracture of the skull. McGuire, 25, meter tester, who thought Eddleman was in the upper pool, dived from an abutment above the dam. He then swam to the crest, got footing, and took hold of planks forming the top of the dam. Noting Eddleman being rolled as though helpless, he went over the dam head first, striking the water within four feet of a concrete foundation and a floating log and touching bottom with his hands. With difficulty he waded to Eddleman and carried him to the bank. Eddleman could not be revived. McGuire sustained severe abrasions on one ankle and a sprained wrist. 38442-3192
