Charles Lee Nelson rescued Tiesha Brockington from burning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1974. Fire broke out in the bedroom of a third-floor apartment where Tiesha, 18 months, was in her crib. Among those attracted to the scene was Nelson, 28, security guard. He ran to the third floor and twice entered the apartment but was driven out by the smoke. On a third attempt, with a window drapery over his head, he reached the bedroom and located Tiesha. Feeling effects of the smoke and heat, Nelson wrapped the drapery around Tiesha and ran with her from the building. Tiesha required lengthy hospitalization for extensive burns; Nelson was confined overnight for smoke inhalation. 54153-6151
