Charles Helmrich, Jr., saved William J. Markowich from drowning, Camden, New Jersey, January 27, 1931. William, 15, schoolboy, broke through thin ice into water 10 feet deep 65 feet from an island in Farnham Lake. Helmrich, 28, mechanic, walked 12 feet from the island on the ice and then broke a passage through the ice for more than 50 feet to the hole in which William was. Helmrich submerged himself slightly, got hold of William four feet under the surface, and then swam 50 feet through the passage to wadable water, where he was given assistance. William was unconscious but was revived.
