Charles Hazlett helped to save Matthew S. Simpson from drowning, Bedford, Pennsylvania, January 18, 1975. When his brother broke through ice on the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River, Matthew, 9, went to his aid and also fell into the deep water. The brother sank and drowned, but Matthew held to the edge of the ice. Among those summoned to the scene was Hazlett, 61, truckdriver. He made his way to the hole and, lying on his stomach, took hold of Matthew but could not pull him from the water. Matthew’s father arrived and pulled on Hazlett, who in turn pulled Matthew from the hole. 54396-6148
