Charles Endres attempted to rescue Joseph E. Johnson from suffocation, Taylorville, Illinois, May 9, 1940. Johnson, 55, laborer, was overcome by carbon monoxide gas in a sewer manhole 14 feet deep. Holding his breath, Endres, 64, street commissioner, descended a ladder to Johnson, began to place a rope around him, and was overcome. Later a fireman, wearing a smoke-mask, descended to the men; and by means of a rope, which he tied on them in turn, they were pulled from the manhole. Johnson could not be revived. Endres was in a critical condition and was disabled for three days. 38399-3191
