Charles Edward Meserve died as a result of attempting to save Loran D. Deveau from being struck by a falling tree, Shapleigh, Maine, September 16, 1978. Deveau, 27, was trimming a felled tree when another, partially cut for felling, toppled in his direction. Meserve, 32, oceanographer, ran over uneven ground toward Deveau but tripped and fell.
