Charles E. Macaluso saved J. Harry York and attempted to save Alberto Camargo from burning, Columbia, South Carolina, November 10, 1969. At night an automobile containing U.S. Army Sergeants York, 31, and Camargo, 22, crashed into a tree, injuring both men. Fire broke out at the rear of the sedan. Macaluso, 22, football coach, ran to the vehicle, where outside flames rose 15 feet into the air and fire had spread to the interior. Opening the right front door, Macaluso reached into the sedan and pulled York from it. He then reached farther into the vehicle and, within four feet of the interior flames, took hold of Camargo but could not remove him because he was caught in some manner. When Macaluso retreated from the intense heat to get air, a high-school student arrived and removed Camargo. A few minutes later an explosion filled the sedan with flames.
