Charles E. Barnes, 32, foreman, died attempting to save Edward Hoagland, 24, from suffocation, Pioneer, California, December 23, 1904. Barnes entered a tank car through the dome to help Hoagland, who had been overcome by gas, and was himself suffocated. Both were dead when removed from the tank.
