Charles B. Evans, 31, farmhand, helped attempt to save Frank L. Scherrer, 21, farmer, from suffocation, Mendon, Illinois, September 12, 1906. After another man’s failed attempt, Evans entered the well with a rope fastened around him, fastened another rope to Scherrer, and ascended. The rope needing adjustment, he descended again about 14 feet and fixed it, then came out feeling dizzy. Scherrer was hoisted, but he died. 4404-387
