Charles A. Mellen, 34, machinist, died attempting to save Giles R., 1, and Lois M. Eldredge, 21, from drowning, Short Beach, Connecticut, August 13, 1916. Mrs. Eldredge and her son, Giles, fell from a motorboat into Long Island Sound, 1.5 miles from shore, where the waves were about two feet high. Mellen dived from the boat, which was in motion, and swam to Mrs. Eldredge. The engine accidentally stopped, and the boat drifted away from those in the water. Mellen took the baby from its mother, who could swim, and started swimming toward the boat, but in a moment he threw the baby away from himself and disappeared. Mrs. Eldredge’s husband swam from the boat to her with two life preservers and then returned and brought the boat to her, and she was taken aboard. Mellen and the baby were drowned. 17165-1337
