Charles A. Foster, 22, carpenter’s apprentice, saved Anna A., 11, and Leland F. Sweeney, 17, schoolboy, from drowning, Sherrill, New York, January 22, 1911. Foster skated to the assistance of Anna and Leland, who were struggling in the Oneida Community Pond after having broken through the ice at a point 40 feet from the bank where the water was over 10 feet deep. With the temperature registering 15 degrees, Foster jumped into the hole, relieved Leland, who had been holding his sister up, and supported her until men pushed a plank over the edge of the hole. Then, sweeping away the floating ice with every stroke, he swam with the girl to the plank. The three were pulled out by the men on the solid ice. 6082-496
