Carol Ann Guthrie, 22, registered nurse, saved Florence L. Fisher, 42, from drowning, Wheeling, West Virginia, January 25, 1957. Shortly after midnight Mrs. Fisher climbed over a railing on a bridge across Wheeling Creek and dropped into the water. Miss Guthrie, who had just come off duty at a Wheeling hospital, was attracted while crossing the bridge. She hurried to the end of the bridge and down a path to the water’s edge, a total distance of 175 feet. Beneath the bridge she quickly removed her coat and shoes while noting the position of Mrs. Fisher, who could be seen only dimly. She then entered the near freezing water and swam rapidly 30 feet to Mrs. Fisher, who was floating face down in water 18 feet deep. Mrs. Fisher did not struggle as Miss Guthrie took hold of her clothing and swam towing her 20 feet to wadable water five feet from the bank. Others who had arrived aided Mrs. Fisher from the water as Miss Guthrie climbed onto the steep bank. Mrs. Fisher and Miss Guthrie were treated for shock and exposure. Both recovered. 44027-4096
