Carnell Johnson rescued Frank A. Porto, Jr., from assault, Oakland, California, October 9, 1985. While walking down the street, Porto, 41, was attacked by two men as their female accomplice threatened him with the car she was driving. Witnessing the assault, Johnson, 29, sanitation engineer, ran to Porto and fought off the two assailants. As Johnson then ran to notify police, the woman in the car drove after him, against traffic, and struck him. Johnson was dragged 300 feet under the car before he rolled clear of it. He was hospitalized in intensive care for severe injuries, some of which were permanent. Porto recovered from multiple injuries.
