Carlie J. Holden, 48, farmer, helped to save C. Augustus Owen, 35, farmer, from suffocation, Liberty, South Carolina, August 31, 1923. Owen was overcome while at work in a well 40 feet deep in which there were fumes from exploded dynamite. Holden was lowered to the bottom in a bucket by means of a windlass and at once noticed the fumes and was somewhat affected. He was unable to place Owen in the bucket alone and called for some one to help him. Owen’s brother descended, and the two tied the windlass rope on Owen, and Owen was drawn out. Owen’s brother got into the bucket as soon as it was lowered again and was drawn out. Holden was then drawn up by means of the windlass. At the top he lost consciousness and only escaped falling from the bucket into the well by being grabbed by others. Both men were revived. 25528-2242
