Carl L. Millspaw, 17, student, saved Maurice A. Rogers, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, February 7, 1919. Maurice broke through thin ice while skating on the outlet of Edinboro Lake, where the water was 13 feet deep. He threshed, forming a hole five or six feet in diameter. Carl skated toward him, went into the hole, and rose near Maurice, who immediately grasped him and climbed upon him. They went under water, and Carl freed himself and put his right arm around Maurice to support him. Maurice was frantic and made several attempts to grasp Carl. An attempt was made by a young man to reach Carl, but the ice broke, and the hole was then 10 to 12 feet in diameter. A pole was extended to Carl, and he held to it until a rope was brought and tossed to him. Carl put the end of the rope around Maurice, and Maurice was then drawn out of the hole. The rope was again thrown to Carl, who grasped it and was pulled out of the water. 19387-1670
