C. Martin Kimbrough, 14, schoolboy, attempted to save Anna M. Dorsey, 14, from drowning, Carthage, Illinois, December 1, 1911. Anna and a younger sister, neither of whom could swim, broke through the ice on a reservoir and struggled in deep water 23 feet from the bank. Martin, who could not swim, skated over 50 feet to the hole. He extended his hand to Anna, and she grasped his wrist with both hands. He pulled her partly out of the water, and then the ice broke and both went beneath the surface. About the same moment, a boy who had tried to get Anna’s sister out of the water broke through the ice near Martin. Martin and Anna came up and went down again, and before they came up, Martin jerked away from Anna. When he came up, a young woman who had skated to the hole extended a hockey stick to him and helped him up on the ice. 7825-877
