C. Elvin Jenkins, 18, restaurant helper, died attempting to save Marie Buchheit, 13, and Stella Lange, 13, from drowning, Southampton, New York, January 8, 1922. Marie and Stella broke through thin ice as they were skating on Lake Agawam about 450 feet from the bank. They threshed in a hole eight feet in diameter and were unable to get a hold on firm ice. Jenkins ran from the bank to the hole, and as he reached toward the girls, he broke through the ice. Two small boys brought short ropes to the hole, and when one of the boys was about to toss his rope to Jenkins, the latter told him to help the girls first. After making vain efforts to toss the ropes to the girls, the boys left for help, crying. The three had sunk and were drowned before help arrived. 22109-1803
