C. Doane Greene attempted to save Cyrus W. Brown, Jr., from drowning, New London, Connecticut, January 1, 1914. Students Cyrus, 17, and Doane, 16, were skating on Lake Brandegee, and the ice broke under Cyrus. He fell into water 12 feet deep at a point 150 feet from the bank. Doane pulled Cyrus to the edge of the ice by means of a hockey stick, but the ice broke under Cyrus, and he fell back into the water. Doane again pulled Cyrus to the edge of the ice and partly up on it, then the ice broke, and both boys fell into the water. Doane obtained a resting place at the edge of the ice, but when he noticed that Cyrus was not able to help himself, he swam about five feet and grasped Cyrus. Both went beneath the surface three or four times before Doane was able to grasp a rope that was thrown to him. He was so exhausted that he lost his hold on Cyrus, who sank and was drowned. Doane was pulled out of the water. 12376-1069
