C. Arthur Dimond died helping to save Christopher J. Dimond from drowning, Nags Head, North Carolina, July 7, 1988. Playing in the Atlantic Ocean near the beach, Christopher, 9, and his sister were carried into deeper water by a strong rip current. Their father, Dimond, 39, attorney, and an uncle, who were nearby on the beach, immediately entered the water and swam to them. Dimond repeatedly pushed and threw Christopher toward shore, submerging and surfacing numerous times while doing so. The uncle acted similarly in behalf of Christopher’s sister, whom he took to the beach. Others arrived and entered the water for Christopher, who had been separated from Dimond. After Christopher was taken to shore, Dimond, who had lost consciousness, was recovered, but he could not be revived.
