Bradley Mentzer died attempting to save Sandra L. Botich from drowning, Yosemite National Park, California, May 2, 1978. Sandra, 16, slipped on a boulder on the bank of the Merced River and slid into the swift water, which began carrying her downstream. Bradley, 17, high school student, ran along the bank in pursuit of her. When he stepped onto a boulder that descended to the water’s edge, Bradley lost his footing, slid into the river, and was submerged. Sandra was washed into a shallow pool near the bank, from where others aided her in getting out safely. Bradley drowned.
