Betty Rae Manock died attempting to save Terrisa M. Voepel from drowning, Charleston, Oregon, June 3, 1972. While frolicking in the Pacific Ocean, Terrisa, 12, was caught by a strong current and carried away from shore. She called for help. Mrs. Manock, 49, housewife, entered the water and, swimming through breakers, reached Terrisa, who then was 70 feet from shore. Mrs. Manock was carried farther seaward; and she drowned, as did two others who attempted to aid Terrisa before a coastguardsman reached her and supported her until a boat arrived.
