Bertie Morris helped to rescue Berlyn Brixner, 21, laboratory assistant, from exposure in a volcanic cave, Afton, New Mexico, December 11, 1932. (See case of MILLARD F. SCHERER.) The ledge on which Morris, 25, police secretary, found Brixner was but 20 feet in diameter, and it was surrounded by five holes, which were about six feet in diameter and six feet apart. Morris took hold of Brixner, and Brixner screamed and struggled with him and then lapsed into unconsciousness again. Gasping from the dust, Morris dragged Brixner to the cable and tied him to it. Holding Brixner between his legs, Morris with Brixner was slowly hoisted, 15 minutes elapsing during the ascent. The sharp projections cut through Morris’s leather gloves, causing his hands to bleed, and his knees were lacerated. 32698-2760
