Bert W. Mertin, Jr., saved Harold P. Reid from burning, River John, Nova Scotia, June 19, 1976. Reid, 21, was driving alone in a station wagon when it struck a utility pole, overturned, and caught fire. Flames filled most of the interior but had not yet reached Reid when Mertin, 56, fisherman, arrived and knelt beside the inverted station wagon. Mertin grasped Reid’s hand at the opening of the broken windshield and pulled him from the vehicle, which shortly afterward was engulfed by an explosive spread of flames.
