Bernard C. King, 35, clerk, saved Ralph C. Brown, 12, from drowning, Warren, Pennsylvania, December 28,1912. Ralph was skating on the ice on Conewango Creek, and he broke through to his armpits at a point 20 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. King went upon the ice some distance from Ralph, and after he had run 15 feet, broke through to his chest, in deep water. The ice broke under his arms as he tried to climb out, and it was not until the third attempt that he succeeded in getting out. Securing a board eight feet long, he slid from the bank on it, but when he was eight feet out, the ice again broke and he fell into deep water. He grabbed the board and broke the ice before him as he made his way to the bank. King then aided a young man and some boys to rescue Ralph by means of a boat that had been brought to the shore. 9790-734
