Bernard A. Makley, 25, tool dresser, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save Spottswood J. Fischer, 27, driller, from burning, Ranger, Texas, May 30, 1923. While Fischer was working at an oil well, his clothing was saturated by a sudden flow of oil and caught fire. Makley, whose own clothing had just been drenched with the oil, ran to Fischer and seized his clothing in an attempt to tear it off. Makley’s clothes at once ignited, and be was enveloped in flames that were not extinguished until his clothing had been almost entirely burned or torn off. Fischer and Makley died four or five hours later as a result of their burns. 23309-1864
