Benjamin I. Green attempted to rescue Thomas D. Rathwell from a cave-in, Ohsweken, Ontario, September 8, 1971. Rathwell, 23, excavating contractor, was in a sewer trench 17 feet deep when a fall of earth covered him to his knees. Green, 28, construction pipe layer, entered the excavation, went to Rathwell, and began digging at the clay soil which held him. Another cave-in occurred. The heavy clay crushed Rathwell’s ribs and covered Green to his waist. Shoring was positioned in the excavation; and other workmen freed both Green and Rathwell. The latter was dead.
