Benjamin Franklin Hays helped to save Benny O. Glover from burning, Santo, Texa., November 11, 1984. When his tractor-trailer hauling 8,000 gallons of raw gasoline overturned and caught fire in a highway accident, Glover, 44, sat pinned behind the steering wheel. Hays, 47, office manager, who had been traveling nearby, ran to the cab with his father and stood near flames as they attempted to remove Glover through the broken-out windshield. As flames and smoke increased, Hays climbed atop the burning cab, opened the passenger door, and lowered himself into the cab, where he lifted Glover partially through the windshield to Hays’ father. Hays then climbed from the cab and, helped by his father, pulled Glover out of the cab and away from the truck seconds before an explosion engulfed the cab in flames. Glover was hospitalized for his injuries, and he recovered. 61110-7044
