Basileios I. Evans, 22, confectioner, saved Edward Dailey, 63, laborer, from drowning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 24, 1914. Dailey, who could not swim, broke through the ice on the Schuylkill Canal, 20 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. Evans, who was in a store beside the canal, heard Dailey’s cries and went to a window 10 feet above the water level and three feet from the wall of the canal. He mounted the sill and jumped toward Dailey, whom he could barely see because of the darkness. He struck the ice three feet beyond the wall and broke though into the water. Breaking the ice ahead of him with his arms, he reached Dailey and took him back through the path he had broken, proceeding with difficulty because of the ice cakes. He and Dailey were helped onto the wall, and Dailey was taken to a hospital. Evans was bruised and too chilled to speak and required the attention of a physician but suffered no permanent injury. 14067-1162
