Bartley Kenney, 67, special officer, saved an unidentified man from drowning, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 30, 1916. A man intent on suicide jumped from a bridge into the Monongahela River. Kenney, who had not swum for 26 years, removed his coat and swam to the man, reaching him 50 feet from the bank, where the water was 10 feet deep. He tried to support the man and take him shoreward but became tired and made no progress. He then pushed the man ahead and swam to him repeatedly until they had reached wadable water 10 feet from the bank. Kenney was winded and lay down to rest. 17325-1275
