Barbara Ann James, 10, schoolgirl, saved Lorraine A., 8, and Carl P. Roberts, 6, from drowning, North Weymouth, Massachusetts, February 11, 1942. Lorraine and Carl broke through ice on the Fore River into water four feet eight inches deep 24 feet from the bank. From the bank Barbara ran on the ice to a point two feet from Lorraine and kneeling pulled her onto the ice. She then crawled around the edge of the hole to Carl and pulled him onto the ice, which broke under them. Carl was submerged; and Barbara, who trod water, took hold of him and supported him. Barbara then swam to the edge of the hole and got hold of the ice. A man broke a path through the ice, waded to them, and aided them onto the ice. Barbara suffered from frostbite, which caused partial paralysis of her legs. She recovered in six weeks. 39689-3310
