Arthur W. Evans, 26, draftsman, saved Harry Howell, 27, clerk, from drowning, Falls, Pennsylvania, August 27, 1916. Howell dived from a boat in the Susquehanna River and was seized with cramp. The boat drifted away. Evans swam 245 feet to Howell and grasped his arm with one hand, and Howell collapsed. Evans tried to swim toward the bank with Howell but could make no progress because of Howell’s weight, and he called for a boat. After Evans had supported Howell for five to 10 minutes, two boats reached.them, and they were taken to the bank. Evans was exhausted when he got in the boat. 17693-1479
