Arthur John Hieb saved Jed W. Webb from drowning, Rupert, Idaho, July 17, 1970. While wading in the Snake River, Jed, 9, lost his footing and was submerged briefly. As he then was carried toward midstream by a surface current, he called for help. Hieb, 44, farmer, was alerted to the situation and ran to the river. Undressing to his undershorts, he entered the cool water and swam to Jed, who was 200 feet from the bank. Hieb began moving Jed diagonally across the current by pushing him, swimming to him, and then pushing him again. By the time they were within 70 feet of the bank, Hieb was fatigued; and he went under briefly. Hieb then continued with Jed to the bank.
