Arthur H. Pingree died attempting to save Helen L. Marston, 15, and Helen M. Perkins, 15, from drowning, Annisquam, Massachusetts, July 19, 1915. The two girls, who were poor swimmers, were members of a bathing party in the charge of Pingree, 47, clergyman, in the Annisquam River. While Pingree was engaged with others of the party near the shore, the two girls ventured out and became distressed 135 feet from shore, where there was a current of 2 m.p.h. Pingree waded and swam to them and allowed Miss Marston to hold to his shoulder while he drew Miss Perkins to the surface. The latter seized him around the neck, causing him to sink, and all three were borne off by the current. Miss Marston remained at the surface by paddling and was later rescued. Miss Perkins was drowned. Pingree was recovered unconscious, but efforts to revive him were fruitless. 15086-1134
