Arthur A. Gagnon saved Gerald W. Milotte from drowning, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, January 23, 1942. Gerald, 10, broke through ice on Social Pond at the edge of open water eight feet deep at a point 60 feet from an island near the west bank. From the island Gagnon, 20, laborer, who had removed his clothing except his trunks, dived and then swam in the open water to Gerald, who was nearly exhausted . He tried twice to push Gerald onto the ice, but the ice broke. He then pressed Gerald against the edge of the ice and supported him for four minutes until firemen pushed ladders onto the ice from the east bank. A fireman crawled on the ladders, got hold of Gerald, and pulled him out. Gagnon then was pulled out. He was exhausted, could not stand, and was carried to the bank.
