Arlington L. Lewis attempted to save Donald F. Kachline from drowning, Ridge Valley, Pennsylvania, July 16, 1934. Donald, 5, slipped from a steep rock into water seven feet deep in Ridge Valley Creek and threshed at a point 50 feet from the bank. Arlington, 12, schoolboy, who was fully clothed, jumped from the rock, grasped Donald’s arm, and held him up. Donald clasped him around the neck with both arms, and both were briefly submerged. Arlington, after trying to free himself, swam in an effort to reach the rock but made no progress. He supported Donald for two minutes before the two became separated in an undetermined way, Arlington being dazed. Kathryn Geraldine Moyer swam from the bank to Donald and held him close to her side. Groping under the surface, she got hold of Arlington and pulled him to the surface. While Donald splashed and kicked, Kathryn supported the boys with great effort for a minute. She then was relieved of Arlington by a youth, who swam to her from the bank. A rowboat was brought to them, and Arlington and Donald were taken to the bank in it, Kathryn and the youth swimming to the bank.
