Archie Ralph Moreland, 13, schoolboy, helped to save Maxwell H. Anderson, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Cleburne, Texas, May 16, 1916. Maxwell attempted to swim across a pool in East Buffalo Creek. He called for help and began struggling 20 feet from the bank, where the water was six feet deep. Ralph swam 15 feet to Maxwell and grasped his arm, but Maxwell threw both his arms around Ralph’s neck, and they went under the surface together. Ralph broke Maxwell’s hold and rose to the surface. Ralph’s brother, Robert, who had followed Ralph, grasped Maxwell’s hair and drew him to the surface. Although Maxwell continued to struggle, Ralph and Robert took hold of his arms and swam 15 feet with him to wadable water. 16601-1510
