Anthony J. Middleton died attempting to save Arthur J. Calkins from drowning, Estacada, Oregon, May 26, 1986. Calkins, 46, was fishing in the Clackamas River when he lost his footing and fell. The swift current carried him downstream. Middleton, 22, landscaper, who was fishing nearby, ran along the bank past the point where Calkins had fallen; he then jumped into the river, swam out to its midpoint, and trod water. He submerged, then surfaced and called for help. He submerged again and drowned, as did Calkins.
