Andrew J. Holmes, 61, farmer, saved Daniel Sullivan, 34, laborer, from suffocation, White Rock, Rhode Island, October 22, 1915. Sullivan was overcome by gas on the bottom of a 33-foot well. A man descended 10 feet but hastily ascended again. Holmes descended 10 feet with his feet in crevices in the wall of the well, but he felt that the gas was affecting him and ascended. He was helped out by others and was only slightly affected. No others present showed any willingness to descend, and some said that Holmes had better not try it again, but he had a rope tied around him and descended on ladders that were placed in the well. Although he felt choked and had difficulty in breathing, he succeeded in tying a rope to Sullivan. Holmes began to ascend, and Sullivan was pulled up after him, but Holmes was suddenly overcome about eight feet from the top. He was drawn out and was revived. Sullivan was also revived. 15765-1317
