Allen Ambrose Jones attempted to rescue Frances R. Funderburk and Mae Rhodes from burning, Phoenix, Arizona, November 1, 1969. A two door automobile containing Mrs. Funderburk, 55, and Mrs. Rhodes, 80, was involved in an accident; and fire broke out at the rear end. Jones, 45, educational representative, ran to the door on the driver’s side and opened it. As the flames spread toward the front of the vehicle, he knelt on the front seat and attempted in vain to remove Mrs. Funderburk. Flames flared up near Jones, burning his bare arm and causing him to retreat briefly. He again pulled on Mrs. Funderburk without success, and again encountered a flare-up of flames. Another man ran with Jones to the opposite door, which was jammed. The man broke the window. By then both Mrs. Funderburk and Mrs. Rhodes were afire. Fireman arrived; but the two women died in the flames. Jones required treatment for his minor burns.
