Alfred W. Kuehnel saved W. Daryle Rockafellow from drowning, Davenport, Iowa, January 27, 1924. While sliding on ice on the Mississippi River, Daryle, 9, broke through into deep water. Kuehnel, 37, shop manager, leaving his wife and two children standing on the ice, ran 35 feet to the hole. He broke through, and Daryle grabbed him and tried to climb on him, causing Kuehnel repeatedly to go under the surface momentarily. Kuehnel’s wife and 12-year-old daughter followed him to the hole and broke through. Then jerking Daryle loose and holding him with his right hand, Kuehnel supported his wife and daughter with his other hand and trod water a few feet to firm ice. Kuehnel pushed Daryle upon the ice, and two men, who then arrived, dragged Kuehnel’s wife and daughter upon the ice. Kuehnel then got out after having been in the water 10 minutes. 24000-2110
