Alfred LaMere saved Patrick M. Miller from drowning, Aberdeen, Washington, August 27, 1985. Patrick, 12, who could not swim,, fell from a dock into the Wishkah River and struggled to stay afloat. On hearing calls for help, LaMere, 64, retired, ran onto the dock from his nearby house and, despite having serious health problems, dived into the river. LaMere swam to Patrick and calmed him. Instructing Patrick to float, LaMere began to push him toward the bank, but en route, Patrick panicked and submerged LaMere. After surfacing, LaMere pushed Patrick the rest of the way to the bank. LaMere was treated by arriving medical personnel for mild hypothermia and exhaustion, and he recovered. 60638-7045
