Albert S. Gargiulo, Jr., assisted in an attempt to rescue Frances R. Funderburk and Mae Rhodes from burning, Phoenix, Arizona, November 1, 1969. A two-door automobile containing Mrs. Funderburk, 55, and Mrs. Rhodes, 80, was involved in an accident; and fire broke out at the rear end. Gargiulo, 40, educational representative, ran to the automobile, where another man had opened one door and twice tried in vain to remove Mrs. Funderburk. As flames spread toward the front of the vehicle, Gargiulo and the other man ran to the opposite door, which was jammed. Gargiulo broke a hole in the window and reached inside. His bare arm was burned slightly, but he was unable to open the door. By then Mrs. Funderburk and Mrs. Rhodes were afire. Firemen arrived; but the two women died in the flames.
